Leviticus 19:1-4 (KJV) 1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 2 Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy: for I the LORD your God am holy.3 Ye shall fear every man his mother, and his father, and keep my sabbaths: I am the LORD your God. 4 Turn ye not unto idols, nor make to yourselves molten gods: I am the LORD your God.
When we come before God, we are approaching a holy being.
One in whom there is no darkness. No shadow. No evil. No lie. No deception. No demonic manipulation or motivation.
God is all together different from us in our carnal natural born state. But he deeply desires to have fellowship with us. And he has paid a high price for that to happen. The blood of his son now covers us (if only we will accept his covenant and submit to his leadership, discipline, and guidance). He washes and cleanses us from our sinful and rebellious and false understanding and wicked behavior, when we repent of it, and ask for his forgiveness, he grants freely.
That opens the door for relationship. So that we can know him, like we know our best friends, but even better. But even deeper, because he has invited us to come in his presence. And he has requested that his spirit would come into our heart and life. Why is that? So that he can be nearer and dearer to us than Jesus was with his disciples, while he walked the Earth before walking to the cross.
So this Call to holiness is not some small little poetry statement. It's actually a command. It's actually the way to life. It is actually a necessary requirement for the child of God. Hebrews 9:14, I believe says: without holiness no one will see the Lord.
Hebrews 12:12-15 (KJV) 12 Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees; 13 And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed. 14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: 15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;
It's a consequence for breaking the Commandments of God. It's a consequence for going against the holy order of heaven. Of neglecting, negating, and ignorantly often times despising the Commandments of God.
As such many will rebel against God's Commandments. But it is they who will suffer. For every commandment we break there is a consequence. And at some point, at someday in the future, we will stand before God and give an account of all those things we did in the body.
For everyone of us that day is getting closer and closer. So the sooner we prepare ourselves for heaven. The sooner will be on track, walking, in the way we were created to walk. Having fellowship with Jesus and walking as he walked.
The opposite is also an option. But it will produce the plague. Both individually, and corporately. And it is a picture of the eternal judgment and corruption that comes from literally disobeying Jesus commandments.
1 Peter 1:14-16 (KJV) 14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: 15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

Disclaimer: This is a long list of Bible verses on the words above. When dealing with sickness and sin, and the consequences, like the plague, that's good to have a background of what causes them, and what God wants us to do when we discover them in our own lives are in the lives of those around us. That's how we can help each other.
It is interesting to see how God uses famine in the land, to move his people into the places and connections that he wants them to have. Sometimes those connections proved to be invaluable. But they also proved to be times of testing and, times of faithfulness. We are called to always represent God well. And influence others in their righteous pursuit of God and his kingdom. But sometimes when we are not faithful, the influence goes the other direction. Other people influence us to ditch our Commandments from God, and follow the customs and the practices of those around us. When we do, we will suffer the consequences. Just as Israelites did when they chose to quit following God's ways, and followed the waves people around them. Who worshiped other gods.
